Lorain County Family Recipes: History and Traditions from Pierogis to Plum Dumplings (History Press)

Twenty-five recipes brought to Lorain County from around the world

(Lorain, Ohio April 2025)—Lorain County attracted people from all around the globe in search of a better life, and these intrepid immigrants brought their culinary traditions and know-how with them. This book shares stories of how people from dozens of ethnicities made their way here, particularly (but certainly not exclusively) to Lorain for steel mill jobs, and records their melting pot memories and mouthwatering recipes.

“Regardless of when and from where a family immigrated to the United States—and why they made that life-altering decision,” said author Kelly Boyer Sagert, “I have found one factor to be universally true: each story is uniquely beautiful and deserves to be celebrated. I hope that readers enjoy hearing about these journeys and trying the recipes that so many people generously contributed.”

Boyer Sagert is the author of numerous other books, including Hidden History of Lorain County, [Shoeless] Joe Jackson: A Biography, >Bout Boomerangs: America’s Silent Sport, and many more. She is also the scriptwriter of Trail Magic: The Grandma Gatewood Story, an Emmy Award-nominated film that appeared on PBS, and the scriptwriter and an associate producer of Victoria Woodhull: Shattering Glass Ceilings, which recently appeared at the Cleveland International Film Festival.

In Lorain County Family Recipes, people from diverse cultures share an incredible range of recipes: hearty meat and fish dishes, side delicacies, delicious desserts, and more. The amazing immigration stories contained within and the families’ culinary contributions make it clear why Lorain County is such a wonderful place to live, visit—and eat.
